Welcome to Gender Gazette, a social media trend and news blog that explores the role of gender in media. Through analyzing current media updates, we can use communication and sociological theories to develop arguments about our gendered world and the discrimination that all genders face.
I’m Rebecca Nagel, the founder and lead writer of this platform. As someone who’s always been captivated by studying the causes and effects of gender in the media, I analyze current news and upcoming social media trends through a gender studies lens. Having studied Communication, Sociology, and Women and Gender Studies in college, this topic has taken over my last few years of education.
Every day, we’re exposed to imagery, stories, and narratives that shape our understanding of the world around us. Gendered messages are everywhere, whether it’s in the news, movies, or advertising. Unfortunately, many of these messages lead to stereotypes and stigma surrounding gender and nonconformity. Gender Gazette’s goal is to expose these biases and provide a critical analysis of the media’s gendered messaging.
At Gender Gazette, we believe that the media that surrounds us has a profound impact on the way we view ourselves and each other. Seeing cisgender white men in the majority of media and even powerful leadership positions causes the wrong portrayal of all non-cisgender men, including (but not limited to) cis-gender women, transgender men, nonbinary, intersex, agender, bigender, and so many other identities. With these rigid gender roles being forced into peoples’ minds every day, it’s crucial to point out and analyze the causes and harms behind these media messages.
We provide a safe space for thoughtful analysis of the media’s gendered messaging. In addition to our analysis of current media coverage, we also provide resources and tools to help our readers better understand and challenge gender inequality in their own lives. Some of these resources include recommendations for books, podcasts, movies, TV series, and other media that provide a more nuanced understanding of gender and the media that depicts it.
By shining a light on the gendered messages in the media, we can inspire change and create a better future. Join us on this journey as we explore the ways in which gender shapes our world and work toward a more inclusive and equitable future for all.
